Mild tension prevailed at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) here on Wednesday as students locked the main gate and other buildings as part of a nationwide university bandh call given by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) in protest against the suicide of a Dalit Ph.D. scholar, Vemula Rohit.
The students are demanding action against the Vice-Chancellor P Apparao, Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, among others, besides justice to the family of Rohit who committed suicide in a hostel room at the campus last Sunday.
The JAC had also objected to the appointment of in-charge Vice-Chancellor V. Srivastav after Apparao went on indefinite leave.
Meanwhile, the in-charge Vice-Chancellor has appealed to the students to allow restoration of normalcy and to resume academic and administrative activities at the university.
