Engineering students can do better in banking sector, said A.R. Singhal, CEO, Corporate Advisors. Singhal was delivering a lecture on ‘Career in Financial Management and Entrepreneurship’ at MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur. The campus interface was organised by Business Line in association with Cairn India — the fastest growing energy company in the world.
Singhal guided the students on how to make a career in investment banking and about the various segments in banking. There are several options in banks other than retail banking. Investment banking has also become a popular option among technocrats, he said. While emphasising that engineering students can do better in banking sector, he said that students can use their rational knowledge to get ahead of commerce students. He also gave the example of Vikram Pandit, who had engineering background and become the head of Citi Bank. Singhal also pointed out that the Marwar region produces entrepreneur and business acumen is in the blood of the people here.
Hard work is essential but not sufficient because soft skills are also required to grab opportunities, he said. Students should improve their communication skills to compete with others.
