School curriculum and textbooks may soon be modified to make the material more gender sensitive, an official statement from the Ministry of Human Resource Development said on Tuesday. This follows an advisory from the Ministry to all State Governments to promote gender sensitisation.

Further, it has been recommended that an annual two-three day gender module be conducted with all teachers.

The Ministry has also suggested that school monitoring systems draw up parameters for furthering gender sensitivity, both within the classroom as well as in extra-curricular activities.

It has also been proposed that from the upper-primary classes onwards, physical education for girls should include training in self-defence.

A task force, constituted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in January, is also reviewing the current arrangement for safety of women in campuses.
