On their part, the 1983 batch pledged to raise Rs 2 crore in the event, which was hosted by IIT-Madras, with participation by over 300 alumnus from around the world.

Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT-Madras, addressing the Reunion Day celebrations, said many important research that must be done falls within gaps of existing funding sources and researchers find it difficult to raise money.

The CSR funding from industry provides scope for these kind of research projects. Faculty can do research and produce technology that will have huge impact. CSR funding can help scale up these projects, particularly those with social impact, to support pilot scale deployments, he added.

He also announced the 12 Distinguished Alumnus awardees for 2019 across various categories, including academics, industrial, research and business/entrepreneurship.
