Around 2 lakh Indians study overseas each year, and are increasingly returning to India to pursue their careers. Education at London universities appears to be especially valued by Indian employers, according to a new survey.

At over 3,000 Indian employers, international experience was found to be a key attribute sought in prospective employees, making Indian graduates studying abroad attractive hires.

Confirming the same, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CEO of biotech major Biocon said, “As a global business, we are looking to recruit the best talent from across the world. We appreciate the value an education in London can provide and are increasingly hiring people who have studied abroad.”

Around 81 per cent of the CEOs and HR Directors surveyed in the nine top Indian cities have opined that Indian graduates who have studied at a London university get a global perspective.

The survey, which was commissioned by the London Universities International Partnership, noted the fast-track career prospects open to Indian graduates with a London education. Over three quarters of the surveyed companies confirmed that London graduates could expect to earn higher salaries and progress faster than their counterparts without an international education.

The London Universities International Partnership (LUIP) is made up of 17 universities in partnership with the Mayor of London’s international promotional agency, London & Partners.

Launched in March 2012, the partnership recently completed the first London Study Ambassadors programme for India and the US.

Gary Davies, Chair of LUIP, said in a statement, “India is still one of the fastest growing economies in the world and these returning students bring independence of thought and cross-cultural understanding that Indian employers have told us add real value to their business when trading on a world stage.”

Gordon Innes, CEO, London & Partners says, “London presents an attractive destination for international students. Studying in London enables graduates to form contacts with other international students and the chance to forge links with companies around the world.”

LUIP will be announcing a series of ‘meet the graduate events’ with returning graduates and employers in five Indian cities later in the year.
