Lok Sabha on Wednesday approved a Bill that would pave the way for 15 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) set up under PPP mode to award degrees to their students.
The Bill -- Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public Private Partnership) Bill 2017--was passed through a voice vote by the Lower House.
This Bill, among other things, sought to declare the 15 functional IIITs, set up under public private partnership (PPP) mode, as institutions of national importance. A statutory status to these institutes would enable them to grant degrees to their students.
Replying to the discussion on this Bill in Lok Sabha today, Prakash Javadekar, Union HRD Minister, said that IIIT is a good system and it will be expanded.
"Education is not about party politics. It is about nation building", he said.
Javadekar also said all reservation related rules were being implemented in the IIITs.
