The Mangalore Central Excise Commissionerate collected Rs 4,960 crore of Central Excise duty during 2010-11 making it the 9th top revenue-yielding commissionerate in the country, according to Mr M.V.S. Choudary, Commissioner of Central Excise, Mangalore.

He said that the major revenue-yielding commodities are petroleum products, ores, and iron and steel products.
During 2010-11, the commissionerate collected Rs 260 crore of service tax.
Services
The major revenue-yielding services of this commissionerate are banking and financial services, port services, storage and warehousing service and works contract service, he said.
A press release by the commissionerate said here on Wednesday that though the majority of the trade comprises honest tax payers, there are certain black sheep among them.
Anti-evasion team
The anti-evasion team of the department has unearthed duty evasion of Rs 1.50 crore in five central excise cases as on date.
The anti-evasion team was also successful in detecting service tax evasion of Rs 6.66 crore in 35 cases and recovering Rs 2.68 crore.
The audit team also detected short levy of service tax and central excise to the tune of Rs 47.45 crore and recovered Rs 9.48 crore.
The release said that the Commissioner is pursuing for acquisition of suitable land in Mangalore for construction of office building to cater the needs of the trade and the officers.
In Udupi, the work relating to construction of office building is already in progress, it said.
CENTRAL EXCISE DAY
The Mangalore Central Excise Commissionerate will celebrate the Central Excise Day on February 24.
Mr Pratap Reddy C.H., Inspector-General of Police (Western Range), Mangalore, will preside over the celebrations.
On this occasion, awards will be presented to select assessees and meritorious officers, the release added.
