“As engineers, you have better prospects for employment but to be professionally successful and become a top notch executive, you need to develop other skills too that help multi-tasking,” said G. Srinivasan, Senior Vice-President, DCW Ltd, Sakupuram, Tuticorin.
He was delivering a lecture on ‘Future of Engineers’, under the Business Line Club of Holy Cross Engineering College, Vagaikulam, Tuticorin, recently.
The event was sponsored by Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, Tuticorin.
He said the career for engineers were wide open today, ranging from industry, education, banking, insurance, government department etc. Energy engineering is gaining popularity and non-conventional energy is the order of the day.
He said that an educational qualification may help open up a career. As a fresher, knowledge of fundamentals and concepts in the related fields is the only expectation from the industry.
As a professional, however, a systematic approach is the key to success. The industry expects everyone to be a full fledged engineer irrespective of the branch of graduation. This is not a difficult job if one puts in an earnest effort.
The functioning of other departments needs to be understood.
What must be realised is that multi-tasking is the order of the day. Working in isolation will not lead to success and bring in the desired results.
Additionally, a good command over Hindi and English, knowledge of a foreign language other than Hindi and English, knowledge of computer operations add to one’s functional efficiency and importance in the organisation.
As a professional, integrity is a basic requirement. Also one needs to be able to express and communicate freely; be simple, accurate and fast in working calculations, computation and technical reporting. More importantly, innovation in anything and everything that one does, accelerates success in the career, he added.
Giving out few tips to be successful, he observed that problems do not diminish with time and one should be able to admit one’s mistakes and learn from them; seek good mentors and follow what they did right; and, focus as much on listening as much as on talking as successful people have been great listeners.
Dr B. Dora Arul Selvi, Principal of the college was present.
