Over 600 UK scholarships on offer for Indian students

The United Kingdom is offering over 600 scholarships to Indian students this year. Of this, 400 will come as part of the Great Britain Scholarships – India 2015 initiative.

Giving details of the opportunities available for Indian students, Mei-kwei Barker, Director, British Council South India, said the 401 scholarships available under the Great Britain Scholarships – India 2015 are worth £1.51 million.

It will be offered for various subjects that include engineering, law and business and art and design, and biosciences across 57 institutions in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Over 130 Chevening scholarships will be available for the academic year 2016. The UK Government will quadruple its funding for Chevening scholarships for Indian students over the next two years, making India the largest recipient in the world.

It is increasing the investment from £0.6 million in 2013-14 to £2.4 million in 2015-16. The UK institutions had offered over 750 scholarships to Indian students over the last two years.

Stating that about 25,000 UK students will visit India over the next five years as part of the Generation UK programme, Barker pointed out that the objective of the initiative is to promote India as a destination to gain study and work experience besides offering mutually beneficial placements that will give young people in the UK a chance to develop their employability skills.
