A team from the School of Economics, University of Hyderabd (UoH), has bagged the second prize in the finals of the RBI Policy Challenge 2018. The team of students pursuing the second year of M.A. in Economics comprised Soumyajit Ray, Atish Kumar, Pravesh Koli, Madhurima Chandra and were guided by faculty advisor Prof Debashis Acharya.
The team was given a topic titled ‘Normalisation in Advanced Economies: Implications for India.’ It made a presentation before an eminent jury comprising Amartya Lahiri, Director, CAFRAL, Mumbai; Sanjeev Sanyal, Principal Economic Advisor, Govt. of India; and Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist, HSBC. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session from the jury. The team was awarded a cash price of Rs 50,000 and a citation.
RBI has been organising the competition for undergraduate and graduate students, to spread awareness regarding financial matters and promotion of a better understanding of monetary and economic issues. RBI should encourage such competitions since it gives a fresh perspective on its policy stance and also reflects the expectations of the public from RBI's monetary policy. For instance, the teams placed first and second both called for a rate hike by 25 basis points in the next bi-monthly," Acharya told BusinessLine .
The first prize went to IIT Kanpur's Dept. of Economic Sciences and the third prize went jointly to IIM Nagpur and the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences.
