The electorate in the Nizamabad Lok Sabha costituency in Telangana will cast their votes on EVMs (electronic voting machines), and not on ballot papers. The Election Commission of India has asked the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Telangana to make arrangements for deployment of EVMs.
After the date for withdrawal of nominations ended March 29, as many as 185 contests remain in the fray, a majority of them being farmers.
The farmers have decided to contest the poll to protest against falling prices of turmeric and red jowar. With Telangana Rashtrama Samithi President K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter Kavitha seeking re-election from this constituency, the farmers’ decision hit the headlines.
Considering the number of contestants, the State body initially thought that they might have to go back to ballot papers for voting. It wrote to the Election Commission of India, asking it to take a call. Ending speculation, the EC asked the body to make arrangements for the deployment of EVMs in the constituency.
