Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy hinted on Thursday that fresh tenders may be called for many irrigation projects in the State.

He conducted a review meeting on Thursday with senior officials and reviewed each project. As the Opposition leader in the previous Assembly, he had alleged that large-scale corruption was taking place in the mega Polavaram project on the Godavari and in other projects such as the Pattiseema lift irrigation project on the Godavari.

Re-tendering likely

It is likely that the process of reverse tendering, or re-tendering, may be initiated by the new government after another round of reviews.

The contractors executing the major irrigation projects in the State are a worried lot. For instance, in the case of the Polavaram project, the sub-contract was given to Navayuga Engineering Company by the Chandrababu Naidu government after it was found that the pace of execution by the main contractor was not satisfactory.

Several other major companies in the State are involved in the execution of the Polavaram project.

Right now, the works at Polavaram have been stopped and the coffer dam is still under construction. There is also uncertainty regarding whether the State government will continue with the project or hand it over to the Centre, as it is a national project.
