Following the Maggi fiasco, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the country’s apex food safety regulator, appears to be cracking down on junk food.
An order put up on its website late on Thursday stated that it will issue guidelines to regulate salt, sugar and fat, in Indian food products that are sold in a packaged form or served at eating joints or catering facilities.
The regulator has also formed an expert group to look into the matter and advise it on the healthy dietary intake of salt, sugar and fat, and recommend regulatory limits and labelling norms for all packaged food products.
“The High Court of Delhi has directed the FSSAI to issue directions or guidelines on the subject qua the school going children…while the said guidelines are being issued separately, it has been observed that the subject needs deeper examination qua all foods,” the order dated June 12 said.
The 11-member panel consists of doctors and dieticians from various hospitals across the country.
