Procurement through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is expected to reach ₹40,000 crore by the end of the current fiscal.

GeM, launched in August 2016, is a one-stop portal to facilitate online procurement of common use goods and services required by various government departments, organisations and PSUs.

Procurements through the GeM site have been around ₹11,000 crore over the last two years. Rising awareness among departments and increasing product portfolio on the portal are the possible reasons for the increased buying.

According to AK Kamra, Additional CEO, GeM is also planning an expansion of product categories. Currently, there are 4 lakh products under 1,900 categories.

“In the last two years of operations of the GeM portal, the total size of procurement in value terms was about ₹11,000 crore. We are trying to reach ₹40,000 crore by the end of the current fiscal,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce here on Wednesday.

A transaction fee of 0.5 per cent to the sellers was introduced recently. As many as 25 States have signed MoUs with GeM to procure products from the portal. Around 44 lakh units have already registered with the GeM.

“We are trying to bring all the product categories reserved for the MSEs in the portal. Some of them have already been included. We have requested the Ministry of MSMEs to provide specifications of the reserved product categories,” Kamra added.
