Representatives of the Republic of South Africa and the Republic of Guyana today pressed for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Addressing the Indian Diaspora at Gandhinagar during the inaugural session of the 13th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) here on Thursday, Donald Ramotar, the President of the Republic of Guyana, extended support for India’s candidature for a permanent seat on the UNSC.
"At the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) the Caribbean community continues to advocate for its reform. Taking into consideration there is a need for adequate representation of all states and even you in an expanded UNSC. Guyana will continue to collaborate towards reforms of this body. Let me also reiterate to the PM the support of my government for India's candidature for a permanent seat on an expanded UNSC."
The need for reform at international bodies such as the UNSC was also raised by the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.
In her speech at the event, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mashabane said there was a need to intensify reforms of global institutions such as the United Nations Security Council and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"It is our hope that we will be able to use our historical relationship and realise our shared aspirations," she informed the gathering.
