Gujarat, which saw polling taking place for all 26 parliamentary constituencies in the State on Wednesday, reported a voter turnout of 62 per cent a close to 15 per cent increase from the voter turnout reported in 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
Vadodara reported a turnout of 70 per cent while the turnout in Gandhi Nagar was 62 per cent, Vinod Zutshi Deputy Election Commissioner said. Vadodara is one of the two seats from which BJP Prime Ministerial nominee Narendra Modi is contesting while former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani is contesting from Gandhi Nagar.
Briefing newspersons on voting for 89 parliamentary constituencies in the nine States and union territories which took place on Wednesday, Election Commission officials said that Punjab where all 13 seats in the State are likely to report a voter turn out of 73 per cent up from 70.04 per cent reported in 2009.
The voter turnout in the seven parliamentary constituencies in Bihar is likely to be 60 per cent, a 15 per cent jump over the turnout in 2009 while in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh the turnout for 14 Parliamentary constituencies was 57.10 per cent up from 47.99 per cent in the previous elections.
Rae Bareli, the constituency of UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi reported a voter turnout of 51.85 per cent while Jhansi from where BJP candidate Uma Bharati is contesting reported a voter turn out of 54.60 per cent.
West Bengal is expected to report a voter turnout of 83 per cent for the 9 parliamentary constituencies up from 81.9 per cent in 2009 while the lone seat in Jammu and Kashmir which went to polls on Wednesday reported a voter turnout of 25.62 per cent.
Andhra Pradesh which had the first phase of polling for 17 parliamentary and 119 Assembly constituencies reported a voter turnout of 70 per cent up from 67.71 per cent reported in 2009.
The latest polling percentage in Telangana is 72 per cent plus. The highest was in Nalgonda – 81 per cent and the lowest in Hyderabad – 53 per cent.
Polls for 438 seats over With the completion of polls on Wednesday the process has been completed in 438 of the 543 parliamentary constituencies which go towards forming the Lok Sabha.
The high profile candidates in the fray on Wednesday included Arun Jaitley (Amritsar, Punjab), Ambika Soni (Anandpur Sahib, Punjab), Rajnath Singh (Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh), Murli Manohar Joshi (Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh) and Farooq Abdullah (Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir).
