The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) D5 mission carrying a GSAT-14 satellite will lift off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR at Shriharikota on August 19. The GSLV-D5 will be powered by an indigenous cryogenic engine. The satellite will enhance communication transponder capacity. The launch will happen at 16.50 hrs, according to Deviprasad Karnik, spokesman at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).The launch was earlier planned on August 6 but postponed to 19.
The GSAT–14 satellite with 6 Extended C band and 6 Ku band transponders is envisaged to enhance communication transponder capacity. The 160 ft tall GSLV is a three-stage vehicle with a 414-ton lift off weight. It has a maximum diameter of 3.4 metre at the payload fairing. It will be the eighth flight for the GSLV. GSLV has attempted seven launches to date since its first launch in April 2001 carrying GSAT-1. The most recent launch was in 2010. Two launches have been successful, with one launch partially successful. Four launches have failed.
