Three weeks after being appointed President of Boston-headquartered International Technology Law Association (ITechLaw), Sajai Singh, Partner of law firm J. Sagar & Associates (JSA), will meet the US Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to discuss issues around cyber crime and Internet advertising.
“Our discussions would be around providing more information to the DoJ such as study papers and facilitating the department on ways to tackle crimes in foreign countries,” Singh told Business Line adding that the meeting will take place in Washington DC.
With terror-related activities going beyond traditional ways into newer areas that involves high technology, governments across the world are grappling with ways to prevent such acts. “The nature of terror has changed significantly and it involves a lot of technology and we will discuss ways in which our body can aid the Department of Justice,” added Singh.
The first Asian to be appointed as the President of ITechLaw, which consists of 1,000 technology lawyers in 60 countries, Singh will also talk to the FTC on fair trade-related issues related to Internet advertising. We will not discuss any aspects related to anti-trust and competitiveness but will aid the FTC on improving the legal framework for fair trade, Singh added. The discussions with FTC will be centred on ways to educate an Internet browser on the difference between paid and genuine ads.
This issue is being debated intensely for its privacy-related concerns in developed economies as high Internet usage has resulted in a deluge of advertisements that are obtrusive, offensive and even criminal in nature. This has fuelled the rise of companies providing solutions to block intrusive ads. One such example in the US is Adblock, which has been installed by 30 million people, a simple but effective tool that makes ads disappear from your web browser.
