Jana Shikshana Trust, a non-governmental organisation working on rural development, is planning to cover anganwadis in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts with solar energy.
Speaking on the sidelines of a solar credit camp in Mangaluru on Wednesday, N Sheena Shetty, member of the trust, said that Selco Solar has come forward to help the trust in its campaign to cover anganwadis with solar power. To begin with, solar power units having a provision for two lights and one fan will be installed in around 50 anganwadis in the district.
Apart from this, the trust is also planning to cover 1,272 houses at Perabe village in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district with solar lighting system. Solar units in those houses will have a provision for two lights and one mobile-charging unit, he said.
Jana Shikshana Trust, in association with Selco Solar Foundation and other agencies, has installed such solar units in around 500 houses in the village.
Ivan D’Souza, Member of Legislative Council, said that he will discuss the need to install solar power system at all the government office buildings in Dakshina Kannada district in the next legislative session.
As of now, roof-top solar power units have been installed at the office of Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district in Mangaluru. The building housing the offices of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat will get roof-top solar power soon.
