Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, renowned cosmologist, has been chosen for the Y Nayudamma memorial award for the year 2013.
Announcing this in a media release, P Vishnu Murthy, founder and managing trustee of the Y Nayudamma Memorial Trust said that Narlikar has been selected for his contributions in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics and for his commitment to demystifying the wonders of space.
The award instituted by the Tenali, Andhra Pradesh-based Trust in 1986 to commemorate the distinguished scientist and internationally-renowned leather technologist Nayudamma, is annually given to persons chosen for their significant contributions to the development of science and technology in the country.
Vishnu Murthy said the award would be conferred on Narlikar at a special function to be held at Tenali, the native town of Nayudamma, on March 1 at which the recipient would deliver the 22nd memorial lecture on the theme, ‘Are we alone in the Universe’. K Padmanabhaiah, former Union Home Secretary, will present the award.
Narlikar joins a list of well-known recipients of the award including Lalji Singh, Rajendra Pawar, V Shanta, VK Saraswat, A Sivathanu Pillai, Nori Dattatreyuudu, Sam Pitroda, G Madhavan Nair, Kota Harinarayana, R Chidambaram, RA Mashelkar, K Kasturirangan, Varghese Kurien, MGK Menon and M S Swaminathan, to mention a few.
