After issuing an order to set up agricultural price commission in Karnataka recently, the State Government is in the process of constituting a commission with participation from farmers and experts.
Bharatlal Meena, Principal Secretary of the Agriculture Department, Karnataka, said this in an informal interaction with presspersons on the sidelines of a review meeting of the district-level officials here on Wednesday.
Stating that the State Government has issued an order for setting up an agricultural price commission in the state, he said it is in the process of selecting people for this commission. The commission will include farmers’ representatives, experts from the departments concerned, and agronomists.
It may be mentioned here that the Karnataka Budget for 2013-14 had proposed the establishment of an ‘agricultural price commission’ to fix suitable prices for agri produces. It had stated then that the commission would fix suitable prices for agri produces based on the scientifically worked out recommendations of the commission.
The commission will also take actions to promote crops depending on the needs of the people.
Stating that the areas under cultivation of a particular crop depend on the remuneration the farmer gets, he said farmers grow more of such crops expecting better price. This leads to a situation of fall in the prices of the commodity.
The price commission will take care of all these issues. It will also educate and motivate farmers to grow crops based on the needs, he said.
