Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture (ASHA) and Coalition for a GM‐Free Karnataka have urged the Karnataka Government to dissolve the Expert Group on Agri Biotechnology (EGAB) constituted by the IT-BT Department.
“EGAB’s constitution and processes are objectionable; it consists of vested interests that cannot be relied upon to advise the Government objectively and scientifically, keeping in mind the best interests of various sections of society for sustainable development,” a note written to the Karnataka Minister for IT-BT Department said.
“In any case, there are more basic questions staring at us regarding the safety of, need for, and capabilities to regulate GMOs in a scientific precautionary manner. We sincerely hope that there will be positive action from the Government on this matter,” the note added.
