Karnataka ties up with Mangalore Univ to launch course for tourist guides

The Karnataka government, in association with Mangalore University, has started a certificate course for preparing guides for the tourism industry. On completing the course, the candidate will receive help in getting a licence from the Karnataka Tourism Department, according to the coordinator of the course.

Speaking at the inauguration of the four-month tourist guide training programme (a certificate course) at Mangalore University on Wednesday, Mustiary Begum, coordinator of the course, said the Department of MBA (Tourism Administration) in the university and the Karnataka Tourism Department have started this course to equip participants with adequate skills to serve as tourist guides.

It will be a mixture of classroom and practical learning. Of the four months, one month will be earmarked for practical training at different tourist destinations.

The training will impart knowledge and information pertaining to various aspects of the tourism industry with special reference to Karnataka in general and the coastal region of the state in particular, she said.

At the end of the training programme, the university will conduct an examination. The successful candidates will get a certificate and licence as tourist guides from the Karnataka Tourism Department, she said.
