Election to urban local bodies (ULBs) in Karnataka is likely to witness a straight fight between Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the coastal belt, Mumbai-Karnataka and Hyderabad-Karnataka regions.

But all eyes are on old Mysore region, where the ruling coalition Janata Dal Secular-Congress is in no mood to accommodate or put a joint fight to take on the Opposition BJP.

On August 31, the polls will be held for the ULBs in 21 of the 30 districts. There are 102 ULBs going to polls; they include 29 city municipal councils, 53 town municipal councils and 23 town panchayats. The results are to be declared on September 1.

The results of these ULBs are unlikely to disturb the JD(S)-Cong combine, but may be a pointer to the performance of the coalition government, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls scheduled in 2019.

Focus on development

Despite coalition pulls and pressure, Dinesh Gundu Rao, President, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), expressed confidence at winning the maximum number of seats, “The Congress is going to the ULB elections, showcasing development works executed during the five years of Siddaramaiah government.”

He further said, “The Siddaramaiah government also contributed in a big way to social security schemes, which will steer our party to power in this election.”
