The Kerala Government would not anymore like to associate itself with the contentious private sector airport project at Aranmula.
The Chennai Bench of the National Green Tribunal had last month revoked the environmental clearances granted to the project citing major discrepancies with the project proposal.
Minister for Environment Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan made clear the government’s revised stand in the matter in the State Assembly today.
He clarified that the government would not want to be associated with a project that does not have legal sanctity, something that came through well and clear from the Tribunal’s action.
No legal sanctity
Neither did it intend to be a party to any review petition that the promoters might decide to file in the Supreme Court challenging the order of the Tribunal.
Earlier, the State Government had expressed its willingness to subscribe to 10 per cent of the equity which had been widely condemned by environmentalists.
Their argument was that the promoters had managed to get clearances by misrepresenting the facts and had scant regard for ecologically fragile area where the project was coming up.
The Tribunal also agreed with the view that the agency that prepared the environment assessment study lacked required credentials to do the job.
