Motor Vehicles Department and the Kerala Police have jointly taken a decision to enforce seat belts for passengers in the rear cabin.
The relevant orders were passed sometime ago but were not being insisted upon till now.
These are now sought to be strictly enforced apparently in the wake of death of Gopinath Munde, who had sworn in as Union Cabinet Minister for Rural development, at a road accident in Delhi.
Munde's car was hit side-on on June 3 near Moti Bagh in New Delhi when he was on his way to the airport. The Minister was declared dead minutes after he was brought to hospital.
Official sources here said that initially vehicles will be stopped and checked with non-compliant passengers being 'advised' about the new regulation.
Old cars dating back to year 2002 and before will need to get rear cabins also fitted with seat-belts.
