Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has instructed BBMP to take all necessary measures to tackle the monsoon-related flooding problems in Bengaluru city.

The Chief Minister interacted with officials at the BBMP meeting on Monday.

Met forecasts suggest good monsoon rains this year. Kumaraswamy directed the officials to be on high alert and to take measures to prevent mishaps and damage to properties.

He asked them to monitor the low-lying areas in the city and take steps to prevent waterlogging and clogging of drains.

Asked about filling the potholes, the BBMP officials informed the Chief Minister that potholes were being filled on a warfooting.

Waste management

The Chief Minister also expressed concern over an increase in the public complaints on the city’s waste management system. He said that maintaining hygiene is a priority of the government and alerted the officials to take immediate measures to improve the services.

Rains last October had battered IT campuses on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) connecting Sarjapur Road and Marathahalli areas. During both south-west and north-east monsoon, the south-eastern parts of Bengaluru gets routinely battered.

ORR is a key commercial office area with capacity of 60 million square feet, which is expected to touch 85 million square feet by 2020, with 800,000-850,000 employees.

Based on such projections, Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) has stressed the importance of short- and long-term planning to improve infrastructure on ORR to make the growth sustainable.
