The Kakrapar Nuclear Power Station in Gujarat

A unit of Nuclear Power Corporation of India’s atomic power plant at Kakrapar near Surat was shut down Friday morning after "a small leak in the Primary Heat Transport System (PHT).

"The Unit -1 of Kakrapar Atomic Power Station KAPS-1 was operating at its rated power and was shutdown at about 9 am on Friday after a small leak in Primary Heat Transport (PHT) system. The reactor was shut down as intended as per design provisions. All safety systems are working as intended," an official NPCL statement said.

The radioactivity/radiation levels in the plant premises and outside are normal, it added.

Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS)-1 & 2 consists of two units of pressurized heavy water reactor of 220 MWe each.

Notably, earlier in 2011 there was an instance of four workmen being exposed to nuclear radiation. However, the radiation was found to be of a minor level hence no impact on the health of workers was seen.

The first reactor was commissioned in 1992 and started commercial operations in May 1993. The second unit was commissioned in January 1995 and the commercial operation began in September 1995. The two units have generated cumulative electricity of 28,682 million units and 29,169 million units respectively.
