The West Bengal Left Front will meet on Tuesday to deliberate on action plans on a protest against recent attacks on its supporters by Trinamool Congress activists.
Sources told Business Line that the party committee will review the emerging situation after its delegation conveyed the Front’s concern over the recent incidents of violence to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and submitted a memorandum.
A 12-member delegation of the Left Front led by Chairman Biman Basu met Mamata on Monday. After the meeting, Basu told reporters that the Chief Minister promised to look into the subject. “If the situation does not improve within a few days, we may take to the streets,” he said.
According to the Front, the delegation communicated the concern over “attacks” on its workers of its constituent parties by “TMC goons”. In a statement, the Left Front said since the Lok Saba polls, violent attacks, particularly on CPI(M) activists and sympathisers, had “reached an alarming proportion.”
At least three CPI(M) activists and supporters have been killed in the attacks. In a separate incident, a student succumbed to injuries after an attack, the statement said.
High degree of violence “Several Members of Legislative Assemblies and former MLAs have been assaulted. A number of party offices have been ransacked, destroyed and burnt. More than 1000 Left supporters have been injured in these attacks.
“Several hundreds have been forced to leave their villages in the face of such violence,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Assembly passed The West Bengal Board of Madrasah Education (amendment) Bill, 2014 amid a walkout by the Opposition including the Left members over the issue of college admissions.
