The low pressure over Southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression over the next 24 hours, according to India Meteorological Department forecast.
“A low pressure area has formed over Southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood on December 1 and now lies as a well-marked low pressure area over Southwest and Southeast Bay of Bengal and may concentrate into a depression during the next 24 hours,” the IMD weather bulletin said.
Few places in Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep received rainfall during the last 24 hours, as per IMD observations recorded at 8.30 a.m. today.
As per Met forecast valid till the morning of December 4, rains or thundershowers were expected to occur at many places over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and at a few places in Lakshadweep and coastal Karnataka.
For Chennai, the sky condition is expected to be generally cloudy, while few spells of rainfall or thundershower would occur, it said.
Meanwhile, a Rameswaram report said heavy rains lashed several parts of Ramanathapuram district inundating all the low-lying areas.
One boat was damaged and sunk as it broke the anchor and smashed on a rock.
In another incident, a fisherman who fell into the sea while fishing swam to the coast last evening.
