The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) will soon launch an exclusive Web site for visually challenged children, volunteers and other stakeholders.
The new initiative is aimed at bringing knowledge, awareness and services to those affected by vision loss of any degree. The institute’s rehabilitation team is working on a digital platform to spread the word on issues related to blindness and remedies.
“The Web site will act as a single platform for stakeholders to understand and exchange information about upbringing of children with vision challenges, early intervention, education, employment and low vision care,” Virender Sangwan, Director – Srujana Centre for Innovation at L V Prasad Eye Institute, said here in a statement.
Globally there are an estimated 24.60 crore people with visual impairment. Of this, 1.8 crore are blind and 5 crore have low vision due to untreatable eye diseases.
“Rehabilitation services can play a vital role in improving the quality of life of such people. However, the problem is only less than 10 per cent of them have access to intervention. The proposed Web site will go a long way in facilitating access to information about services and intervention,” he said.
