Co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of Infosys, N R Narayana Murthy on Friday said he was “positive” about the company setting up a campus in Kolkata. The project is held up due to the West Bengal Government’s objection to granting the campus a SEZ status.
“I am certainly positive (about the Kolkata centre). There is no doubt about it,” he told reporters after a programme organised by the Anant Foundation.
Infosys does not yet have a full fledged campus here in the State.
“There is a solution to all the major problems in the world….therefore there is a solution to everything that we think is unsolvable,” Narayana Murthy added.
During the erstwhile Left Front’s tenure, Infosys had purchased nearly 50 acres of land in Rajarhat on the eastern fringes of Kolkata at around Rs 1.5 crore an acre.
The company also made the payment in full in October last year.
However, problems started after the Mamata Banerjee government came to power in the State and objected to the SEZ status for the project. Infosys sought clarity on the cancellation of the SEZ status and has since kept the Bengal project on hold. It is still not clear whether Infosys will go ahead with the project without the SEZ status or not.
When asked, Narayana Murthy too did not clarify the company’s stand. “Please speak to Infosys people. I am not the person to answer,” he said to a question.
