The State Government should allot land in the new industrial estates proposed to be launched in the southern districts for solar power generation, according to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association (TECA), Coimbatore.
It has also hailed the move for an industrial estate to manufacture solar power panels in Tirunelveli which it said would give a boost to this renewable energy sector.
Responding to Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha’s announcement of the launch of a number of industrial estates in the South, D. Balasundharam, President, TECA, requested the Chief Minister to allot land in each of them for solar power generation. Referring to the fact that these industrial estates would have electrical sub-stations for power distribution, he said the same infrastructure could be utilised for evacuation of power generated by the solar power facility in these estates.
He suggested that the industrial units coming up in the estates could be encouraged to come together to generate solar power under Group Captive Generation scheme.
Renewable energy hub
Balasundharam also welcomed the proposal to establish a renewable energy hub in Tirunelveli where solar power panels would be produced which would accelerate the development of solar power in the State. The move would also lead to the development of solar power equipment manufacture in Tamil Nadu as envisaged by the Solar Power policy unveiled by the State Government.
