The State government has announced an increase of 10 per cent in the dearness allowance payable to employees and teachers.

The revised rate will be made applicable with retrospective effect from July, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced here after a meeting of the State Cabinet. This takes the dearness allowance component to 63 per cent of the basic salary, he told newspersons here.

In deciding on the revision, the Cabinet had merely chosen to endorse an enabling proposal made by Finance Minister K.M. Mani.

The payout at the revised rate will mean a monthly outgo of Rs 130 crore from the exchequer. This is the fifth time that the State government has announced a revision in dearness allowance, the Chief Minister said.

It will also bring the employees on a par with their counterparts in the Central Government and fetch them the same benefits without any lag.

In a separate decision, the Cabinet decided to grant university employees the same scale as State government employees.

In yet another decision, it gave in-principle clearance to a proposal to hand over ownership of Golf Club in Thiruvananthapuram and its premises to Sports Authority of India.
