Continuing with its Ghar Wapsi programme, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday got 11 members of three Muslim families converted to Hinduism, even as it is rumoured that group conversions will be staged at several places on Thursday, Christmas day.

The conversion event was held at Kizhavoor in Alappuzha district. The conversion ceremonies, lasting several hours, were conducted at a temple and attended by senior VHP leaders in the district.

Today’s conversion is the fourth such in Kerala in as many days.

On Sunday, 35 Christians were converted to Hinduism by the VHP in Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts. This is the first time the VHP got Muslims converted in Kerala. VHP leaders claimed that all of the 11 had earlier been Hindus.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports say that the VHP will stage mass conversion events at several places on Christmas day, mainly targeting Dalit Christians.

The Shiv Sena has announced that it would hold mass conversion events in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode next month.

However, the State government has taken the stand that no forced conversion has taken place so far and hence the government could not intervene.

PTI reports: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, replying to a question on the reported conversions, said at a Cabinet briefing: “There is no compulsory conversion or recoversion in the State and it will not take place also. If somebody voluntarily takes any decision, what can the government do?”
