After actor Mithun Chakraborty, the All India Trinamool Congress on Sunday nominated eminent painter Jogen Chowdhury for the coming Rajya Sabha elections.

The Rajya Sabha elections will be held for 55 seats in 16 States and the notification is slated to be issued on January 21. Candidates will have to file nominations by January 28.

The party also nominated two others – Ahmed Hassan, editor of Bengali daily Kalam , and TMC’s Rajya Sabha member from Jharkhand K. D. Singh – for the polls scheduled to be held on February 7.

According to Mukul Roy, General Secretary, the Trinamool Congress is eligible to nominate four of the five members that are to be elected to Rajya Sabha from West Bengal. Accordingly, besides Chakraborty, three more members have been unanimously resolved to be nominated, he said. Singh had been elected to the Rajya Sabha on a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) ticket. He, however, joined Trinamool Congress later.

“We want Singh to represent West Bengal as he has been working for the State for long,” Roy said here.
