An estimated 3,000 Keralites — most of them nurses, paramedical staff and hospital employees — are stranded in Yemen.
Most of the Keralites are said to be working in the capital city of Sanaa and the port city of Aden. Keralites form the largest community in the nearly 10,000-strong Indian expatriates in the ancient Arab country, whose President was last month deposed by the rebels.
The Non-Resident Keralite Affairs Department (NORKA) has opened an emergency cell at Thiruvananthapuram to keep in touch with those working in Yemen and to offer support to their relatives. NORKA Minister KC Joseph said the government would take all possible efforts to get those stranded back home.
The Kerala government had in the recent times helped hundreds of Keralites, most of them nurses, working in the trouble-torn Iraq and Libya to return home. Special flights had been sent, in collaboration with the Central Government, to airlift them.
