Autodesk, the US-based software firm, has evinced interest in preserving India’s cultural heritage with its latest digital technology.

The company showcased the novel applications of Autodesk Recap at the 4th edition of the INK conference, which began here on Friday.

Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice-President, Autodesk, told reporters that the recap technology would help conserve, preserve and educate on heritage structures around the world. Autodesk Recap is software and services to create intelligent 3D data from captured photos and laser scans.

The company, he said, is in discussions with the Unesco to make a broader technology gift to support heritage conservation.

“We are particularly interested in helping India, which has one of the world’s richest collections of world heritage sites such as Ajanta Caves, Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Himalayan Railways etc,” he said.

According to him, the software makes it easy to clean, organise and visualise massive datasets. He cited the instance of using photo grammetry techniques to create an accurate 3D digital model of Bamiyan Buddhas. After the Taliban bombed the Bamiyan Budhas, there was no known record of the Buddhas. The company piloted a project to create a digital record from published photos, he said.

The INK conference, the annual flagship conference organised in association with TED, aims to provide a platform to a stellar line-up of achievers from diverse disciplines and geographies to meaningfully engage with an audience of over 600 people.
