Better deal sought for domestic workers

The Confederation of Free Trade Unions of India (CFTUI) affiliated to International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), has demanded a better deal to domestic workers in the country which can be achieved only if the Union Government ratifies ILO convention (C-189).

CFTUI national president N. Kanaka Rao, who hails from the city, told reporters here on Thursday that thousands of domestic workers were denied minimum wages with no social security and their condition would improve if the resolution was ratified. He was recently elected president at the CFTUI meeting in Varanasi.

He said the ILO convention held in Geneva in 2011 sought ratification by all member countries to offer decent working conditions to domestic workers.

After attending the fourth congress of CFTUI at Varanasi recently where the national body comprising 19-member national executive committee and 15-meber national council were elected, he said the union passed important resolutions opposing privatisation and disinvestment and for organising unorganised sectors for achieving demands such as securing minimum wages and decent work.

Kanaka Rao said the union was fighting for implementation of labour laws, improvement in the working conditions of anganwadi workers and ratification of ILO convention in support of domestic workers.
