Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad’s efforts to make a comeback to electoral politics in Bihar have failed miserably. He could only retain the four seats he had won in 2009. Both his daughter and his wife lost the elections. His alliance partners Congress and NCP got two and one seat, respectively.

Lalu’s alliance was getting rousing reception at the Muslim pockets. He hoped that the Muslim-Yadav combination will bring his party to a comfortable position. But the public mood was different. He failed to consolidate his base even among the Yadavs. The organisational and political weaknesses of the ruling Janata Dal (United) helped the BJP.

Bihar is another State where the BJP was hoping for a major haul, due to the Modi wave. Though both the JD(U) and the RJD denied any such wave, the voters wanted a change from the stereotype politics of the social justice parties.
