The Centre has called for a meeting on Monday with the States to discuss strategy for ‘ Swach Bharat ’ (Clean India). Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch this mission on October 2.

The meeting will also review progress in the National Rural Drinking Water Programme, besides taking stock of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) launched during the first year of the 12th Five-Year Plan and also the factors behind its failure.

The meeting has been called by the Ministry of Rural Development, Drinking Water and Sanitation and the focus is on providing clean water and more toilets especially in rural area, an official statement said.

Modi, in his Independence Day speech, had expressed his Government’s commitment to achieve ‘ Swachh Bharat ’ by 2019 as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, by eliminating the unhealthy practice of open defecation.

He directed every school in the country to provide toilets separately for boys and girls by August 15 next year.

The State Ministers conference will explore all avenues to achieve this, the statement said.
