Land has been identified to build an air-conditioned facility on the lines of the Chennai Trade Centre at Madurai.
Plans are afoot to construct a convention centre on an 9.5 acre plot at Avaniapuram at an estimated cost of Rs 6 crore.
Mayor V. V. Rajan Chellappa made the above announcement after unfurling the national flag at the 67th Independence Day celebrations here on Thursday.
He said the funding for the project is expected to come from the Tourism Department.
The encroachments on the site have been removed and preliminary works will commence soon, he said in an informal chat with reporters.
Even though Tamukkam Grounds hosts big events, there is no air-conditioned auditorium in the city.
The proposed convention centre will have A/C halls and adequate parking space.
