A portion of a flyover collapsed early on Sunday morning in the North-Eastern part of Kolkata , injuring three people.

According to Kolkata police, a block of the flyover collapsed at around 4 am near Ultadanga. A truck was passing over the flyover when the incident occurred. The truck fell into the canal below. The three people, including the driver, were in the truck, police added.

They were admitted to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Rs 68-crore flyover was inaugurated in January 2011.

The 1,290-metre flyover, connecting Eastern Metropolitan Bypass with VIP Road that leads to the airport, was partly funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The project had faced time overruns because of work stoppages.

The engineers reportedly had to change the alignment to the approach road owing to local protests over demolition of certain “unauthorised” structures.
