In Sitraruvipatti, a remote settlement hamlet of Vellimalaipatti in Kottampatti block in Madurai district, solar home lightening system was launched through the co-ordinated efforts by Nabard, Indian Overseas Bank and SELCO SOLAR, Bangalore. The hamlet forms forms part of Kesampatti Watershed project of Nabard. There are 30 children in the hamlet out of whom 20 are going to school 4 km away by foot daily and use only kerosene lamps for pursuing their studies at home after dusk. S. Natarajan, DGM, WS, PMU, Madurai, who inaugurated the system said in his address that every nook and corner of remote areas should be covered by solar lighting systems and more and more banks should come forward to finance them.
