International Paper APPM Limited has inaugurated a check dam at Tantikonda Village near Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh to help the local farmers.
This is the second such check dam constructed by the company. The first one was constructed in Mamidilova in Vizag District. The check dam spans 10 meters and has a storage capacity of 7.5 lakh litres. The Pushkar canal serves as the water source.
The check dam was constructed with an investment of Rs 5 lakh. With proper irrigation system, the total cultivable area is set to increase from the current 68 acres to 200 acre.
Rampraveen Swaminathan, President, IP India and Chairman and MD, IP-APPM, in a statement said, “Sustainability has been one of the core objectives of International Paper and it has always been our endeavour to move it to the communities where we work and live. Watershed management initiatives, such as the Tantikonda Check Dam, help the local farmers in saving their crops from excess water flowing through the canal and contribute to their livelihood.”
Every year due to heavy flow, farmers who cultivate paddy and other crops lose their produce as water washes away the crop. During the monsoon these problems increase many fold destroying the livelihood of farmers. The check dam is expected to address this problem.
