Sets up cold storage unit at Talapady near Mangalore

The Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd is strengthening its supply and collection chain networks.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of a cold storage unit at Talapady on the outskirts of Mangalore on Thursday, Raviraj Hegde, President of the union, said that as part of this plan, the union is setting up cold storage units in strategic locations to ensure a better supply chain network.

Built at a cost of ₹12 lakh, the Talapady cold storage unit can store up to 5,000 litres of milk and other products of the union, he said.

Highlighting the logistical advantage of theunit, he said it will help customers from Ullal and the surrounding regions in Mangalore taluk. All these days, the milk agents were getting supply from the city. With this unit, the agents can procure milk from the cold storage unit, he said.

At present, the union has three such units in various places under its jurisdiction. Plans are on to set up such cold storage units in taluk headquarters, he said.

Hegde said that steps have also been initiated to strengthen milk collection chain under the jurisdiction of the union. The union collects around 2.6 lakh litres of milk from 52,000 farmers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts every day.

The union has set up 52 bulk milk cooler units in various locations in these two districts. Plans are afoot to set up another 40 bulk milk cooler units under the National Dairy Plan of the Central Government.
