The time-consuming process of securing permits from local bodies for construction of houses is likely to become smoother with the State government deciding to make the process online.
From November 1, the State Formation Day, applications for building permits can be filed online and the permit will be issued online within a month.
The Information Kerala Mission has developed a software called ‘Sanketham’ for the Local Self Government Department. The department hopes that the online system will facilitate granting of building permits “in a transparent and standardised manner, strictly following the Kerala Municipal Building Rules and Kerala Panchayat Building Rules.”
The procedures such as verification of documents and site inspection will be manual. The applicant will be informed of the inspectors’ visit through mobile phone messages. After the procedures are over, the applicant can download the building permit certificate with digital signature and seal.
Currently, securing building permits entails long delays, corruption and bribery.
