The Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said today that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) would withdraw support to the Congress—led government in Maharashtra. NCP will contest election on its own, and this has signalled an end to the 15-year old alliance with Congress in Maharashtra.

Ajit Pawar has blamed Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan for the current decision over split. He further added that his party was never neglected by earlier Congress Chief Ministers. He said that he would quit as Deputy Chief Minister.

NCP legislature party leader is likely to meet Maharashtra Governor tomorrow to hand over the letter of withdrawal of support to Maharashtra government.

Congress general secretary Mohan Prakash, however, said, "We tried our best to save the alliance but it seems NCP’s decision was pre-scripted.
