Training of skilled workers by National Skill Development Corporation under the recently rolled out Standard Training Assessment and Reward (STAR) scheme is on track in the current fiscal, according to Dilip Chenoy, Managing Director and CEO.
It has been given a target to train 10 lakh youth within a year from the day it was rolled out in September this year.
“So far, we have covered 35,000 youth and we are on track to achieve the 1.2 lakh mark by March this year,” he said on the sidelines of an event here.
The Star scheme has been formulated to encourage skill development by providing monetary rewards for successful completion of approved training programmes of the corporation.
“The biggest advantage of the scheme is that it will unify standards of training across the country,” he said.
Earlier, the corporation released a report on the skill gap in Andhra Pradesh at a workshop on Employability organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
The report pointed out that the incremental manpower demand in the state is estimated to be about 62 lakh up to 2017 and 47 lakh from 2017 to 2022.
“The State is expected to have a workforce of about 444 lakh till 2022. About 85 per cent of this will be minimally skilled and the rest 15 per cent skilled and semi-skilled. Therefore, the state will need to skill the workforce being added each year in additional skills as required by the industries,” it added.
Only the districts of Visakhapatnam, Nellore, Guntur, Mahbubnagar and Karimnagar are expected to generate the majority of skilled manpower. Sectors such as construction, hospitality, banking, mining and manufacturing will be driving incremental requirement of skilled manpower in the State, the report said.
