Plastic firms to invest Rs 3,000 cr in Gujarat

About 150 MSME plastic manufacturers would invest nearly Rs 3,000 crore in the upcoming plastic park at Dahej in Bharuch district of Gujarat.

These firms have already booked plots to set up their units in the 200 acres allotted by the State Government, Raju Desai, Chairman, Plastivision India 2013, told presspersons here on Saturday.

Each of these units would invest Rs 10 crore to Rs 25 crores. The first units will commence production in 2015.

He also said the Ninth Plastivision India 2013, an international exhibition-cum-conference being organized by All India Plastics Manufacturers’ Association (AIPMA), will be held in Mumbai from December 12 to 16. Over 1,500 exhibitors from 30 countries will participate in the event.

Another plastic park, planned to be set up in 150 acres at Sanand in Ahmedabad district, once the government allots land, is expected to attract an investment of nearly Rs 2,000 crore.

Gujarat produces 70% of India’s plastics raw material as also 70% of machines used in this industry, and employs about one lakh people in 10,000 units, 40% of these being recycling units.

India consumes 10 million tons of plastics annually, including 10% imported, and is expected to double the per capita consumption from the current 8.5 kg in the next five years. The Rs 90,000 crore plastics industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15%. The world average of per capita plastic consumption is 22 kg with topmost consumer being the USA with 25 million tons per annum.
